High court overturns lay judge decision; shortens rapist's prison term › Japan Today: Japan News and Discussion

A Japanese lawyer friend of mine warned me about this a little while ago. Because of the new "lay judge" system in Japan, (trial by jury), the sentences handed down may become much more strict. My friend said that because Japanese people have a sick way of wanting to punish people harshly for breaking social code. But the interesting thing about this case is that to my western mind, the sentence almost seems TOO light! 13 years for two assault and rapes?!?! and he is suspected of two more?

Also, the high court seems to only have lowered the sentence by 1 year.....hmmmm. Maybe their just trying to make a point.

What do you think?

  1. I don't get their logic.. "NO, no 13 year sentence is too much and too long. yes.. 12 years are just right..." That is just dumb.
